If there is one place you should absolutely have a first aid kit it is in the glove box of your car or truck. There are nearly 7 million car accidents a year in the United States alone and with more drivers crowding more highways that number can only go up. When and where accidents occur are anyone's guess but you can bet that trained help will take at least 15 to 20 minutes to arrive on the scene. This could be even longer if you are on a congested highway or obscure back road. How often have you been stuck in traffic and watched an ambulance inch its way through a maze of cars?

Regardless of where the accident occurred having well stocked first aid kits in your vehicle allows you to take immediate steps to treat injuries while waiting for trained professionals and the police to arrive. If you cannot move freely, are pinned in by doors or feel intense pain do not try to move. If possible try to use a cell phone to call for help but do not exacerbate the situation by trying to force your way out.

Whether you are in a multiple vehicle crash, slid off icy road or hit a deer that forced you to swerve into a barrier there is a very good chance that will at least suffer minor cuts and bruises. Even when wearing a seat belt the impact of a collision can cause your body to slam into a door, windshield or dashboard resulting in open wounds and perhaps broken bones. After the accident, if you are able to move around without major pain and are conscious of what happened you can begin the recovery process.

A well stocked vehicle first aid kit will contain all the essentials for providing first response aid to you or an injured passenger. Make sure your kit contains a number of different size bandages, sterile gauze cloth, sterile alcohol pads, antibiotic ointment packets, scissors, tweezers and a small ice pack. You can treat minor cuts and bruises yourself and prevent infection in the immediate aftermath of an accident by sterilizing the wound and applying gauze, an adhesive bandage and if needed tape or a wrap to secure the bandage. Tweezers are great tools to have on hand for removing splinters, broken glass and other debris that may be in an open wound.

Once you've tended to any injuries that are within your kits resources to treat you can now begin to set up a perimeter around your vehicle to alert emergency rescue teams and the police. Many vehicle kits can be found that include 12-hour light sticks, flashlights, radios and whistles to alert medics to your location. If it's night or foggy weather it can be hard for ambulances to find the accident scene, especially if you went off the road. Being able to flag down help with flares, flashlights and whistles can get professional help to the scene even faster.

Lastly, consider stocking your vehicle first aid kit with fresh drinking water, a high calorie food bar and solar blanket to keep yourself hydrated, maintain your energy and warm your body if the weather is cold and you can't take shelter in the damaged vehicle. Of course a fully charged cell phone is an indispensable tool these days and if you can dial 911 as soon as possible and stay on the line with an operator until help has arrived. Studies have shown that just hearing another person's voice can give many accident victims the hope to hang on. Don't take chances with cars and trucks. Always have a fully stocked first aid kit in your vehicle.
