What is the best way to get my bicycle from Long Island to Santa Fe, NM - ship it or use a car bike rack?
They're both good ways of getting a bike from here to there. And both have their pros and cons. Packing and shipping will cost a couple bucks, especially if you have a bike shop pack it for you. And you run the risk of damage during shipment.
If you strap it on a bike rack, it will won't cost anything extra to bring it with you. But it will be exposed to the weather along the way, and will be an easy target for someone if you stay overnight in a motel and leave it on the car.
If you have the time, the best way to get it to New Mexico is ride it there and let someone else take the car!I'd take it with me. If you ship it it will cost at least $ 100 if you do it right. It could be damaged getting there, or worse, lost. I'd buy a bike rack,and cover it to keep it clean. Take it into a motel room when you do a rest stop.
